Working with Partners Development and Design Innovation Architects, BarberMcMurry designed the The Delaney Building as part of a larger, mixed-use development surrounding the new Covenant Health Park in downtown Knoxville.
The nine-story, mixed-use building will include retail and restaurant spaces on the ground floor, below-grade parking, a second level with office space, and seven stories of residences. The building is named for famed American modernist painter Beauford Delaney, a Knoxville native who is well known for his work with the Harlem Renaissance. While living in Paris, his abstract expressionist works gained worldwide acclaim. His childhood home was just south of this new high rise which will bear his name.
As part of the stadium’s surrounding development, the Delaney Building will extend retail and residential development down Jackson Avenue, past the James White Parkway overpass, toward East Knoxville — reconnecting neighborhoods that were demolished and separated from Downtown Knoxville during Urban Renewal.
