The Discovery Innovation & Simulation Center — DISC — at East Tennessee Children's Hospital is a technology-forward space dedicated to the latest innovations in pursuit of improved healthcare outcomes for patients. DISC includes uniquely-designed spaces for virtual reality, collaboration, research and development, training, simulation, and 3D printing. A family skills room provides space for hospital experts to meet with individual families in a comfortable learning space.
The design uses branded colors and elements to tie this space into the larger hospital. One of the major design elements is a serpentine louvered wall that divides the main corridor from the collaboration space. Similar to an impressionist painting, each louver is etched with dots using a sublimation dye technique, which, when viewed at a distance, reveal a graphic of children's faces. The smiling faces are a gentle reminder of the patients the hospital serves each and every day.
