This contemporary addition and renovation elevates a traditional, boxy lakeside house into an open and welcoming home that takes advantage of the site’s expansive lake and mountain views. The renovation and addition included expanding the kitchen and dining areas; renovating the family room, pantry, wine bar and laundry room; redesigning and opening the three-story core stair; and redesigning the side entry to be more welcoming.
The kitchen and dining areas were expanded to accommodate entertaining, beginning with the demolition of a second-story bonus room to open the kitchen below, bringing in more natural light and architectural design elements. The existing breakfast room was demolished. In its place, an expanded dining room is enclosed in glass. The addition also draws out the home’s side entry with a modern canopy. The core stair was opened to maximize natural light and views and to connect the living and entertaining areas with each other and the rest of the house. The renovation and addition bridges the gap between the traditional home and its new, contemporary elements. Natural materials and finishes bring the outdoors in.
"The open stair serves both as a sculptural element and an efficient modulator of open space, subtly separating living, dining and family rooms."
