Challenge: A technical community college located in a 1950’s high school needed replacement windows, an ADA ramp, and new canopies over two front doors.
Solution: This is a modest project; one that sought to maximize the architectural impact of a utilitarian kit of parts. The owner simply wanted replacement windows, canopies, and an ADA ramp. We were able to show them that through those simple moves, we could give their campus a new identity. By developing a window pattern that reflected the nature of the technical learning occurring within and then carrying that pattern detail to the entry canopies and into the site lighting, we were able to give this existing school building a new identity reflective of the community college housed inside. The design of the building entry canopies, the replacement windows, and campus lighting seek to reflect the nature of technology, learning, energy, and activity that will advertise the college’s presence and mission to the community.
