University of Tennessee Medical Center – Heart Hospital

Building Area: 118,000 SF New / 10,000 SF Renovation

Date of Completion: 2010

Type: New Construction / Renovation

Location: Knoxville, TN

Budget: $23,750,000

Challenge: Design a hospital addition to provide increased patient care capacity.

Solution: We were commissioned to expand the patient
capacity of a regional medical center and provide CVICU care housed within
a new “Heart Hospital”. In identifying the site for expansion, we recognized
the selected location’s visibility and proximity to a major interstate
and campus entry provided the perfect opportunity to create a new front
door to the campus. This campus, expanded and renovated multiple times
over 50 years, suffered from a lack of discernible “entry”. Our design
creates an immediately recognizable iconic entry, lobby, and waiting area.
This embracing front door becomes the first impression for patients and
visitors.
