Thompson Cancer Survival Center

Building Area: 112,400 s.f.

Date of Completion: 1988

Type: Renovation

Location: Knoxville, TN

Budget: $12,000,000

Challenge: Renovate an existing facility into a cancer education, diagnostic, and treatment center, while creating successful connections to both pedestrians and a new parking garage.

Solution: A seven-level tower serves as a new connecting element between building functions that include a 300-car parking garage, auditorium, and research spaces. Opening onto a streetside plaza, the tower also serves as the center’s new main entrance, complementing adjacent Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center and East Tennessee Children’s Hospital on its lower levels. The facility is diverse in use and accommodates patient treatment and research areas, community health forums, and serves as a cancer information center for the East Tennessee Region
