ETSU Parking Garage, Welcome Center Office Building, and Dining

Building Area: 424,933 s.f. / 1,224 spaces

Date of Completion: Fall 2013

Type: New Construction

Location: Johnson City, TN

Budget: $21,300,000

Challenge: Design a parking structure that houses not only 1200+ spaces but also public safety offices, a welcome center, and a food service component.

Solution: ETSU needed a multi-function garage that solved their parking needs, housed their police and welcome center, and provided a place for students to pick up a snack or cup of coffee on their way to class. The site selected for this new garage placed it at a very prominent location and entry to the campus. ETSU desired this building to also function as the “gateway” to the north-west corner of campus – making the garage’s architectural integration with existing campus architecture of particular importance.

BMa designed an efficient parking structure that also functions as an anchor for this end of campus where first time visitors can stop at the new welcome center. The garage and site design also enhance a busy student thoroughfare with the creation of a pedestrian mall. Lastly, the material palette and architectural detail blend contextually with the surrounding buildings of ETSU’s campus architecture.
