Church Street hired BarberMcMurry as architects, with the New York firm of John Russell Pope Architects as design consultants. BMa's design work included many of the building's architectural details, including selected furnishings and lighting. The firm also was responsible for assuring that the building's intricate details were faithfully executed during the construction process. The project was especially important to Charles I. Barber, who was a member of Church Street.

It has been reported that President Franklin D. Roosevelt, while visiting Knoxville for the dedication of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in 1940, remarked, "That is the most beautiful church I have ever seen."

BMa also designed the addition of the 1950's education wing as well as the Church Life Wing in 1989.

Awarded as one of 15 Top Projects of the Past 150 Years by the East Tennessee Chapter of the American Institute of Architects
