University of Tennessee Medical Center - Heart Hospital

Building Area: 118,000 SF New / 10,000 SF Renovation

Date of Completion: 2010

Type: New Construction / Renovation

Location: Knoxville, TN

Budget: $23,750,000

Challenge: Design a hospital addition to provide increased patient care capacity.

Solution: We were commissioned to expand the patient capacity of a regional medical center and provide CVICU care housed within a new “Heart Hospital”. In identifying the site for expansion, we recognized the selected location’s visibility and proximity to a major interstate and campus entry provided the perfect opportunity to create a new front door to the campus. This campus, expanded and renovated multiple times over 50 years, suffered from a lack of discernible “entry”. Our design creates an immediately recognizable iconic entry, lobby, and waiting area. This embracing front door becomes the first impression for patients and visitors.

Patient services at the entry and second floor include increased endoscopy capacity and cardiovascular care beds. The third and fourth floors are constructed as shell space for 64 future cardiac care beds. Vertical expansion is planned for five additional floors.
