University of Tennessee - Joint Institute for Advanced Materials
Building Area: 142,634 s.f.
Date of Completion: N/A
Type: New Construction
Location: Knoxville, TN
Budget: $43,000,000
Challenge: Design a state-of-the-art materials science research facility as the first building on the new Cherokee Campus.
Solution: The facility is organized in a 4-story rectilinear bar running from east to west. This orientation enables the use of sun shading and natural lighting to be integrated. This orientation also minimizes the building’s profile as seen from the residential zone on the far side of the Tennessee River.
The main entry and quad access is on the first floor, opening into a multi-level lobby space with access to the seminar room, conference room, and second & third floors.
Office functions are located around the building perimeter while the building core is made up of laboratory and support spaces.
Joint venture with Bullock-Smith & Partners.
LEED: Silver (projected)
