Niswonger Performing Arts Center
Building Area: 40,000 s.f. / 1,200 seats
Date of Completion: 2004
Type: Addition
Location: Greeneville, TN
Budget: $6,500,000
Challenge: Provide a 1,200 seat dual propose high school auditorium and community performing arts center.
Solution: Rather than simply copying the detailing of the high school renovation, the design of the performing arts center derived its inspiration from the original school's architectural design of the 1950s and early 1960s modernist principles. These, we believe, serve as examples of a timeless architecture that complimented the renovation design of the high school, while at the same time providing a unique identity to the performing arts center apart from a simple high school auditorium. Attention was carefully paid to the intricate detailing and design coordination of the lobby curtain wall, exterior paving patterns, interior floor patterns, wood paneling, lobby design, and auditorium finishes. The exterior massing remained simple and straight forward, by comparison, allowing the focus to remain on the entry and performance spaces.
