Challenge: Design and construct two hospitals and a MOB in 24 months.
Solution: Beginning in the middle of 2001, we started the process of designing the campus for Mercy West (formally Baptist West). Given the client's challenge for having the entire facility open and accepting patients in 24 months, we worked closely with the user groups, hospital administration, developers, and contractor to ensure that the design could be brought in on time, in budget, and meet the needs of the health system. Although the two hospitals and MOB are housed in a contiguous structure, each has its own architectural identity and entry point. We designed the hospital around easy way finding, centers of excellence, and future expansion. The MOB is designed for conversion into hospital space, the Women's hospital is designed for vertical expansion, and the main hospital is designed for horizontal expansion. The design for expansion was thought through during the early master planning process.
